By the time of our story, and the incident with the gift, Steven and Caroline’s son Jonathan was already three years old. Despite it having been three whole years, Steven was still deployed most of the year, every single year. Caroline tried to keep up appearances and pretend everything was okay, and she was doing it well, but of course, the reality was sadder. Caroline felt alone, and there wasn’t anyone she could talk to.
