For about six months of every year, Steven was away in far-off lands on active duty. That’s half of every year he spent away on the other side of the planet. How could he be there enough for the child, and for his wife? It was physically impossible. Did this mean that Caroline was going to have to raise the child alone for half its childhood? She discussed this with her husband in great detail.

Steven promised that he’d slow down at work, that he’d get stationed closer to home, and actually be around more often. He even said that he may leave the military entirely and find work that would let them be at home all the time. Caroline was very excited and began thinking about the brilliant future for her happy family, however, Steven hadn’t been keeping his promises up until now, and so Caroline started getting upset.
