The British Canal system is very narrow and therefore employs the use of barges or narrowboats since the industrial revolution. The average barge can travel at speeds of about 6 miles per hour and barges were originally designed to travel on inland water systems such as canals and lakes but some of them can take to the seas should the need arise.
