Mind you, this was not the first time that Steven had made grand promises, only for nothing to come of them. Steven was well known to her at this point to always be making promises he wasn’t actually going to keep. Speaking of promises, he did promise he’d be making it up to her with a very special present, didn’t he? Perhaps now you can see why it may not have been what she expected…

Caroline tried to keep up a brave face and stay angry at her husband, angry over the extension of his mission, and all his excuses. Steven was a sly one though and knew her weakness. He knew that she loved gifts, and so by promising her a big one, he had effectively disarmed her. It appears Steven was applying tactics picked up at his job to his relationship. Would he actually deliver on his promise?
